Let’s work together to create safer retail environments

In light of recent evidence (Read more: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-66699084), Tesco staff will now be equipped with body cameras due to a concerning surge in violent attacks. Physical assaults have surged by a third since last year, and this mirrors findings by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), which reported a nearly doubling of abuse against retail staff compared to pre-Covid levels.
This isn’t an isolated issue; similar actions have been taken by Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, and Co-op. Tesco’s CEO, Ken Murphy, calls for stricter laws targeting offenders. While changes have been made to consider attacking shop workers an aggravating factor in convictions, he believes it’s time to classify ‘abuse or violence towards retail workers’ as an offence.
