Following our recent collaboration with Revolve Labs, IKON Training continues to explore new ways to redefine conflict resolution training. We recently visited the award-winning XR Lab at West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds, which is named the UK’s ‘most inspiring place to learn.’
During our visit, we had the opportunity to meet students from the Digital Technologies Degrees programme and share an idea for their Reality, Immersion, and Innovation module. We presented a challenge: exploring how XR (Extended Reality) could enhance Breakaway Disengagement Training. The students are now considering IKON as their Industry Client, with the potential to develop innovative solutions that merge cutting-edge technology with practical training.
XR, or Extended Reality, refers to immersive technologies like Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). These tools are reshaping learning by offering dynamic environments that simulate complex or high-risk scenarios.
In training contexts, XR provides:
This approach creates opportunities for learners to engage with realistic, hands-on scenarios that prepare them for unpredictable challenges.
VR offers a unique way to immerse participants in realistic, high-pressure scenarios, enabling them to practice and refine their decision-making skills. One standout feature of VR training is branching pathways, where participants experience the impact of their decisions in real time.
These scenarios give trainees the space to build confidence, empathy, and adaptability in a controlled, low-risk environment while learning how their actions shape outcomes.
The XR Lab, part of Eastern Education Group at West Suffolk College, has among the most advanced facilities in the UK. We shared our vision for enhancing Breakaway Disengagement Training with XR technology during our visit.
This session provided an opportunity to highlight how real-world training expertise and student creativity could work together to deliver impactful solutions.
The XR Lab’s cutting-edge technology, combined with fresh perspectives from the students, creates the potential for innovative developments that address practical workplace challenges across multiple sectors.
In parallel, IKON and Revolve Labs have been developing VR-based training modules. Recently, we filmed three 360° conflict scenarios at Stowhealth, replicating high-pressure healthcare settings. These immersive modules allow participants to:
Our visit to the XR Lab marks the start of what could be a valuable collaboration with the next generation of digital innovators. We look forward to seeing how the students approach this challenge and the creative solutions they might develop.
A big thank you to Hamish Mackenzie, Peter Hicks from Revolve Labs and and the team at West Suffolk College for facilitating this meeting and providing an inspiring environment for collaboration.
This is just the beginning of a journey where technology meets real-world training needs. Stay tuned for updates as we continue exploring XR’s possibilities in training.
