What does it take to deliver training that truly makes a difference?

For IKON Trainer Nick Pamment, it’s not just about what you teach it’s how you show up.

In The Trainer Code, Nick shares ten guiding principles that shape his work in the training room. From preparation and presence to mindset and meaning, this personal insight offers a people-first framework for building confidence, connection and impact in every session.

1. Look after yourself

Self-care fuels focus, passion and the stamina needed for a demanding schedule.

Nature walks, healthy eating, good sleep and hydration are the cornerstones of my well-being. Training takes energy and presence,  so replenishing those reserves is non-negotiable. As Stephen Covey says, Sharpen the saw.”

2. Prepare for success

Preparation transforms pressure into calm.

Getting organised in advance isn’t just practical it’s essential for my mindset. With everything in place, I can be fully present for the learners in front of me.

3. Know your stuff

Confidence comes from competence.

At IKON, continuous learning is part of our culture. Staying curious, upskilling, and sharing knowledge helps us bring our best to every session.

4. The power of you

Quiet reflection is a strength.

I used to be told I was ‘too quiet ’, but now I know that deep listening and considered contributions are powerful.

Insight takes time. At IKON, authenticity is welcomed, and that’s helped me grow into my voice.

5. It’s all about them

Training is about the learner, not the trainer.

Since my first instructor boot camp in 1998, one phrase has stuck with me: “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Everyone brings a story, and when we take time to listen, we create space for real learning.

6. On time – every time

Timekeeping shows respect for the learners, the content, and the process.

Punctuality sets the tone. It’s a sign of professionalism and creates calm, well-prepared sessions. At IKON, we aim to arrive early, handle any tech issues, and create a welcoming space for our learners to settle in.

It also gives me peace of mind and keeps my own anxiety in check, so I can focus fully on delivering a great session.

7. Surprise & delight

It’s not just what you teach, but how.

Humour, stories, and humanity make learning stick. It’s about reading the room and adding warmth where it’s welcome. These moments create trust and memorable training.

8. Practice what you preach

Lead with integrity.

Respecting other trainers and approaches strengthens our community. At IKON, I stand by what we deliver and celebrate those who share our mission to make workplaces safer.

9. Details matter

Consistency builds credibility.

Getting the small things right, from appearance to accuracy, sets a professional tone. Learners notice, and it helps them feel valued, supported, and confident.

10. Record & recharge

Finish strong and reset well.

Capturing feedback, closing off admin, and reflecting on each session supports continuous improvement.

IKON’s digital systems make it easier to wrap up well and return to principle one: look after yourself.
