Understanding Breakaway Training 

Breakaway training equips individuals with the skills and confidence to navigate potentially aggressive situations safely. It goes beyond physical techniques, encompassing de-escalation strategies and recognising warning signs of escalating behaviour. 

Empowerment Through Awareness 

Breakaway training empowers staff by prioritising their safety and giving them the confidence to protect themselves and others from harm. By understanding pre-aggression cues and de-escalation techniques, individuals can better manage dangerous situations before they escalate 

Recognising Warning and Danger Signs 

Warning signs indicate when a situation is tense. In contrast, danger signs signify an imminent threat to safety.  

By being aware of these cues—such as changes in behaviour, body language, or verbal threats—individuals can take proactive measures to defuse tensions and ensure their safety. 

Warning Signs 

• Raised voice – shouting  
• Abrupt tone  
• Closed answers  
• Breathing rate accelerates   
• Direct, prolonged eye contact  

Danger Signs 

• Swearing  
• Threats  
• Pursed lips  
• Gritted teeth  
• Fists clenching/unclenching  
• Stance changing to side on or fighting stance  

Assessing Risks and Impact Factors  

Effective risk assessment involves considering personal and environmental factors that could influence the outcome of a situation. Factors such as age, strength, and location play a crucial role in determining the appropriate response to a potential threat.

While physical techniques are essential, they are just one aspect of breakaway training. Simplified, memorable techniques ensure that staff feel confident and capable of handling challenging situations without resorting to outdated or risky methods.

Understanding relevant laws and legislation is paramount in ensuring individuals act within their rights to protect themselves and others.  

Breakaway training covers various legal aspects, including legislation such as Section 3 of the Criminal Law Act 1975 (Sec 3CLA 1975.), Common Law principles and Human Rights considerations.  

By providing learners with the knowledge of legal contexts, including the use of force legislation and human rights, breakaway training ensures that individuals are equipped to navigate complex situations with confidence and compliance.
