MVA (Management of Violence and Aggression) Training provides practical skills for staff who may need to respond when behaviour escalates. Designed for school and further learning teams working in higher-risk environments, the course supports staff in managing aggression safely and protecting staff, learners and visitors.

The training covers practical de-escalation strategies, dynamic risk assessment and the legal considerations around physical intervention within education settings.

  • Site teams / security staff – Respond calmly and safely to aggression, trespass, refusal and volatile incidents on campus, protecting staff, learners and visitors.
  • PRU / alternative provision staff – Build consistent team responses in higher-risk environments, supporting safer classrooms and more stable learning spaces.
  • Pastoral teams & heads of year – Support learners in crisis, reduce escalation early, and manage emotionally heightened situations with calm structure and clear boundaries.
  • Safeguarding leads & DSL teams – Strengthen decision-making where behaviour, vulnerability and risk intersect, including reporting, post-incident process and learning culture.
  • Behaviour & inclusion teams – Apply structured de-escalation and dynamic risk assessment strategies in higher-risk situations, improving safety and consistency across staff.
  • College student services & support teams – Manage challenging interactions with students and visitors in public-facing settings, including reception, welfare, and support services.

  • Recognising behaviour changes and early warning signs.

Legal rights and responsibilities 

  • Understanding organisational policies and procedures in education.
  • Applying a clear legal framework for decision-making.

Part 4:

Reporting and Support

  • Documentation, reporting, and safeguarding considerations.
  • Post-incident procedures and staff support.

Part 5:

Stance and Positioning

  • Positive body language and calm authority.
  • Using safe distance and positioning for protection.
  • Enhancing tactical awareness in classrooms and shared spaces.

Part 6:

Breakaway and disengagement techniques

  • Disengagement methods to support safe escape and repositioning.
  • Balance displacement techniques where appropriate.

Part 7:

Restrictive physical intervention

  • Demonstrate agreed restrictive interventions.
  • Restrictive and escorting techniques to relocate individuals to safety when required.

Part 8:

Medical implications of techniques

  • Identifying risks associated with restrictive interventions.
  • Recognising medical implications, including positional asphyxia.

Part 9:

By the end of this course your team will be able to:

  • Recognise and respond to incidents appropriately.
  • Use effective communication and de-escalation skills.
  • Reduce risk for staff, students, and visitors.
  • Safely disengage from aggressive situations.
  • Hold and relocate using risk-assessed physical techniques
  • Understand the legal and medical implications of restraint.
  • Competently report, debrief, and improve practice after incidents.
